Buying Guide for Boots – Women

Shopping Guides

Follow our tips for choosing the best boots for women

As we enter the winter period, it is the perfect time to check out your boots. Don’t discard boots which can be re-heeled, or re-soled. Find a shoe repair company in our Find-a-pro section.

But if you need to buy new boots this winter, here is our helpful guide for buying boots for women.

Here are some things to consider when choosing boots for women. Don’t leave it too late to shop, sizes are often limited and popular sizes tend to fly off the shelf!

Size

When choosing boots it is typical to start with your shoe size, but some boots need to be worn with thick socks. So take into account whether you will be wearing the boots with socks or tights to be sure not to buy a size too small.
Not all boots will work with wide feet, slim ankles, or wide calves. So be aware of you feet size and shape. If you have wide feet, avoid pointy toes. If you have slim calves avoid wide fitting boots, which will make you look like you are wearing wellington boots. Look for narrow topped boots, or boots with elastic (best to try these though as even some elasticated boots will be too loose).
Wide calves can be accommodated more easily with elastic gussets, or look specifically for wide fitting boots.

Usage

Whether you are buying boots for casual dressing, for leisure, for walking, or for sports, you need to choose the right boot.  If you are going to be doing a lot of walking, heeled boots are probably not practical, and will not be comfortable. Walking and hiking require utmost comfort, so look for boots which are made for this type of activity. If you are looking for boots which will be practical to wear in snow and ice, look for boots with adequate grip soles, avoid leather soles.

Height

For added height, choose boots with a heel. These will elongate your legs and add inches for those who can do with a boost.  Tall women can wear style of boot, for bold fashion moves try an over-the-knee boot, or an ankle boot with heels to dress up an outfit.

Budget

Boots are available from very affordable to high cost. It is worth investing in proper walking boots, particularly if this is a regular activity. Safety and comfort of your feet, which will take the brunt of torture from ill-fitting boots, cannot be understated. Typically, well made boots can be re-heeled, re-soled and generally brought back to life, particularly leather boots. So if longevity is important, consider investing in a pair of boots which can last you a lifetime.

Flat Ankle Boots

A practical every day book, flat ankle boots come in a variety of styles. Leather ankle boots are classic and will last a lifetime, suede is a great alternative, but don’t forget to use suede protector BEFORE you wear the boots outside. It’s really too late afterwards. Invest in a good suede cleaner and brush to keep suede ankle boots looking smart for longer.

Ankle Boots with Heels

Perfect for a smarter work look, or for a night out, ankle boots with heels can enhance an outfit and add a height boost for those of us who are lacking! The size of the heel is super important. Stiletto heels whilst elegant and sexy, will require much more care, particularly walking around town. Heels can get caught between pavements, in the treads of escalators, and they will find their way into every crook and cranny you can think of. Scuffed heels are a hazard of stiletto boots. Block heels are much more practical and are currently on trend.
